Business Start Up Checklist

◊ Do You Have A Business Plan?

This is likely the most important part of your new business endeavor.  Your business plan doesn’t have to be complex but it should be at a minimum a clear roadmap for you of what you want to accomplish and what success looks like to you.  You can add additional details as you go along but be sure to start with a clear vision of the road you are preparing to travel

What are your local requirements?

Requirements for each of the areas below will vary by city, county and state.  Be sure you know what the requirements are for the municipality where you plan to do business.

o Business License

o Fictitious Business Name

o Employer Identification Number

o Reseller Permit

What is your business structure?

There are pros and cons to each of the business structures listed below.  We always suggest a discussion with a CPA to find the structure that is best for your venture.  Many CPAs will offer a free 30 minute or 1 hour consultation.    Find someone who you are able to communicate well with because a good CPA will be an asset as you grow and expand your business.

o Sole-Proprietorship

o LLC

o S-Corp

o C-Corp

Bank Account

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to keep your personal and business income separate.  Get a separate bank account.  Novo and Azlo are two great online options specifically for small business owners.

Digital Presence

More than ever, it is critical to have a presence in all of the locations where people shop and that means, online.  Be thoughtful about your digital presence and how to make a lasting and meaningful impression on anyone who comes across your site.

o Logo and Brand design

o Website

o Social Media

o Affiliate Marketing

Government Contracts

Don’t overlook opportunities to do business with the government.  There are many ways to obtain government contracts but the starting point is registering with SAM and if eligible, E-Certify.
